Sitapur is a traditional production center of handmade rugs, durries and Bathmats dating as back as Mugal Regime in India". The district is well known for the cotton and woollen carpets made in Laharpur and Khairabad and exported to other parts of the country as well as abroad. These products have appealing and artistic designs. A carpet is a textile floor covering typically consisting of an upper layer of pile attached to a backing. The pile usually consists of twisted tufts which are typically heat-treated to maintain their structure.
Sitapur as the name depicts, was established by the king Vikarmaditya after the name of Lord Ram's wife Sita. This place has glorious mention in ancient, medieval and modern history. This is a land of saints and sufis. Purans were written by Rishi Ved Vyas on this holy land. According to Hindu mythology the 'Panch Dham Yatra' journey of five main religious Hindu places will not be completed without visiting Neemsar or Naimisharanya, a religious place in Sitapur. Dargah of Hazrat Makhdoom at Khairabad and Hazrat Gulzar Shah are the symbols of communal harmony.
This district was famous for its textile industry since 17th and 18th century. The East India Company arranged to export the handloom material manufactured in Khairabad and Dariyabagh. Biswan was famous for earthen potteries. The district was also famous for engraved door panels. There are five sugar mills and some flour mills, rice mills in the district.
