Tarkashi Art
Tarkashi is a technique of inlaying brass, copper or silver wires in wood. It is a unique and artistic product of this district. It is used for decorating jewellery boxes, name plaque and other similar items. Along with this, the amazing art of Tarkashi can be seen in door panels, trays and lamps, sandook (chest), decorative pieces, tables, flower pots etc. Usually, Sheesham wood is used for this art in Mainpuri. The process of inlaying metal into wood carvings is a laborious and highly skilled work. The process involves carving of the design from a piece of paper onto a hard block of wood in the form of deep and thin grooves. Then the wires are placed in the grooves and knocked into the position by a hammer.
Introduction
Mainpuri district comes under Agra Division. Mainpuri town is its district headquarters. This district falls under south western zone in the western region of Uttar Pradesh. It is bounded by Etah on the north, Farrukhabad & Kannauj District on East, Etawah on the south and Firozabad and Etah district on the west.
Stitching and Embroidery (Zari-Zardozi)
Zari and Zardozi work is in practice from very old time in Mainpuri. Basically, embroidery work is done here on the pre-stitched clothes. The tradition of zari work was started from Mughal era. Costly embroidery on royal dresses and on the attire of royal families, gave birth to this art. Though this art has been spread in entire district but still some of the families reside here whose ancestors were engaged in the embroidery on the dresses of royal families of Mughals. Golden and Silver threads used in this art. The attires which have less cost are also worked with silk threads. A metal needle is pierced on designs and art is engraved. Really it is quite difficult work but artisans of Mainpuri district having expertise in it. Attires finished here with zari and zardozi are sent for marketing in nearby districts.
