    Kanpur city is the largest center of leather industry in the country. In the British period, the presence of large number of troops in the region created a natural demand for various leather products. Even before the establishment of factories leather goods were manufactured by the village craftsman as cottage industry which used to meet the local demand for carriage, harness, saddlers and pots. A variety of leather products like footwear, belts, purses, slippers, garments, saddles are made here. Kanpur city contributes over 20 per cent of the total leather and leather goods export of India. The products made here are exported to various countries including several US and European countries.

    Introduction

    Being the biggest city of Uttar Pradesh, Kanpur was once termed as Manchester of India for its flourishing cotton industry and is considered as the main center of commercial and industrial activities. Nestled on the banks of the eternal Ganga, Kanpur stands as one of the major industrial centers of North India with its own historical, religious and commercial importance and now it is recognized as the commercial capital of Uttar Pradesh. Kanpur has an advantage of its fertile agricultural hinterland of the Upper Ganga Valley and Bundelkhand plateau and the easy transportation because of which the industrial demand of the district is enhancing day by day. Currently Kanpur is very famous for Leather Industry in the world. The main mineral of the district is sand. The sand is available in plenty in Ganga River which is used in construction of homes, bridges and roads etc. Brick soils are also available in Kanpur Nagar. About 50 brick fields are running in the district and nearby area. These are major employment generation sources for rural poor families. Some of the major Industries based in Kanpur are the world famous 'Lal Imli' woolen factory, LML, Pan Parag, ICI Limited (now known as Duncans Fertilisers), one of the largest leather industries in the world and myriad cotton mills. The city also has a number of defense establishments i.e. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), DMSRDE, Small Arms Factory (SAF), Field Gun Factory and Parachute factory.

    Hosiery and Textile products

    Kanpur is generally recognized as industrial city but some industries have earned special mention for the district. Hosiery and textile industry are in such list of industries. Hosiery products of this district are famous across the country and abroad too. District is self-depend in terms of raw material. More than 92% raw material required for this industry is received locally. Some items needed for this industry are imported from Delhi, Ludhiana and Kolkata. Being specialized, Kanpur is also referred as “Manchester of east”. A large portion of the population is involved in industries and as a sub-portion hosiery and textile industry holds a bigger segment of employment.
